Minister of Citizen Protection

Michalis Chrysochoidis has a distinguished career spanning security policy, energy, infrastructure, markets, and trade. A long-serving Member of the Greek Parliament, he has held multiple key ministerial positions, including Minister of Health, Citizen Protection, Infrastructure, Transport and Networks, Growth, Competitiveness and Shipping, and Deputy Minister for Growth and Trade.

As Greece’s longest-serving Minister of Citizen Protection, he spearheaded groundbreaking reforms in public security, modernized the Hellenic Police, and led major crime-fighting and counterterrorism initiatives. His tenure was instrumental in dismantling the Revolutionary Organization 17N, resulting in the conviction of its members. He also reinforced border security with advanced electronic surveillance systems and the construction of the border fence along Greece’s eastern frontier with Turkey. His work fostered extensive European and international collaborations, focusing on law enforcement training, intelligence sharing, and technological advancements.

In the Government formed in June 2023 as Minister of Health, he prioritized the transformation of the National Health System, emphasizing on patient care, emergency services, and mental health reform—a long-overdue initiative finally realized under his leadership. He secured critical funding through the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) to modernize hospitals, health centers, and medical equipment. Additionally, he established a nationwide network of Care Units specializing in strokes, dementia, and trauma.
